Karma exists because energy cannot be destroyed, it can only be transferred. I like to think that it's the Buddhist way of instilling fear in people. It's a less threatening version of other religions' impending repercussions for when you commit sin, which is probably why I like it better. It's not difficult to choose which one to prefer:

Do bad = Receive bad
Do good = Receive good
Screw up = do it all over again
Buddhists are kind of like the good cops, modern parents in the religious scene. Only problem with modern parents is they get walked all over and their kids think they're scum.
