First weekend of shooting Dream Cradle. Unfortunately I haven't any of the actual stills just yet. These are all photos from continuity.
I think I did well, considering it's my biggest production yet. I still have a way to go but oh my god, we got some beautiful shots thanks to Rich Wang, our brilliant DOP. Sascha was a superb First AD and of course I wouldn't be anywhere without Pasquale as producer nor our lovely actors. Damien was right when he said I must have something to have a crew of such caliber. I'm not sure what it is, luck probably, but working by their side was humbling and it made my job so much easier. Everyone was slick efficient. I'm quickly developing some techniques to directing and it's been a really great learning experience so far. It's pretty amazing how the script is so shootable because being broken into three different narratives, we can afford to shoot in throughout two weekends, which is invaluable to an independent production.
It's knowing exactly what you want before everyone else that's a challenge, but that's something that comes with practise and experience. I still think that for the lack thereof, I did really well. The rushes look beautiful so far. I hope post comes along smoothly. The Red is a beautiful camera to shoot on, it's not funny, but post is going to be a bit of a bitch. Addamski's going to be doing special effects and with him on the team too, I can't imagine how we could go wrong.

It's so frustrating when I get job or collaboration offers that end with "oh, but you're not going to be in the country then." Kills me. I'll be back in Malaysia by early April, for sure. Yes, I will be available for any film productions, photo shoots et al. Also, I realise it's been a while since I've done anything on stage and on camera to the point where I don't think anyone remembers that I sing anymore. ]=( So here's a quick shameless self-promotion resume of my experience:
I've been on and off stage since I was 3, had my first modeling gig when I was 4. I hosted a couple of childrens' radio shows in Sabah on the Rangkaian Biru network and even sang. I'm not going to say which song though! I've also won numerous awards (gold mostly) throughout primary school for elocution competitions in Malay and English, as well as for spelling (it's sweeeet being one of the very few English speaking kids in a Chinese primary school buahahah). In high school, I was on stage mostly for singing and acting. I was an active participant in the school choir for 5 years as a soprano and have a pretty high vocal range if I practise. On a good night slicked with possibly enough liquor, I could do 'Phantom of The Opera'. I also play the acoustic guitar and a bit of drums. Just a liiittlle bit. I've won a couple of awards for best actress for class plays and had a lead role in the school play for my final year of high school, which I helped to direct.
Recently I've been in film and photography, doing various roles behind the camera: writing, directing, editing, camera assistant and art department. I cannot stress how much I hate being First Assistant Director. I've had two screenings in Malaysia and Australia, with one in Buffalo, New York to come. I love being involved in creative projects and productions but occasionally I don't mind being in front of the camera as a break. I've had a couple of acting classes, one of which was with Mano Maniam. I wouldn't ask for a huge acting role but something minor is fun too. I acted for a friend's live-multimedia show in New Jersey titled 'Chemical Pink', which you will find if you search me on Youtube. You're going to have to pardon my terrible, barely-conversational Mandarin though. ]=P
If you're in New Zealand, I was an extra in a Hannah's Shoe commercial. Hahah. I was also modeled for an independent Turkish t-shirt brand, Amma Ve Lakin although my picture has since been removed:

Just a reminder that I dabble in front of and behind the camera however if I had to choose, I'd say that I prefer to be behind the camera. I don't think I could ever act in a script I wrote though, that's a big taboo. I'd rather shoot myself in the foot. So if you're interested in collaborating with me, do contact me at nad.ilana@gmail.com. I'll be back in Malaysia by this April, till then, I will be in Brisbane, Australia waiting for my graduation ceremony, graduating in a BFA in Film and Television. ]=)

Sex Space Intimacy is an unabashed look at the feminine identity and its relationship to sexual culture, the physical/historical space we occupy and our intimate relationships.
Emerging artist, Melody Woodnutt fuses sound, light, construction and artwork in this interactive installation to challenge our position and relationship with art, inviting us to question our perspective and heed our compliance with popular thought. Participate in the interplay between abstraction and experience, literally stepping into, on and around the fabricated construct of societal views.
Film by Nadira Ilana.
OPENING NIGHT DRINKS Oct 9th Rock up to take a peek and have some drinks!
Pop an arty cherry.
Hell pop an arty cherry every night of the show!"
The dialog is from the actual novel 'The Reader' by Bernhard Schlink but some of it has been altered to suit the narrative. The original narrative is in chronological order whereas my arrangement of this story is original.
This film is for academic purposes only. The filmmaker does not have the copyrights to this story based on the novel 'The Reader' by Bernhard Schlink.
Okay, I'm not really sure what's going on with this weekend. There was a slight miscommunication but I'm getting screened for Filmmakers Anonymous 7 which is on the 27th of this month. Details are on the blog.
My short film 'The Reader', shot in New Jersey, is going to be screened at Annexe Theatre, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur this 27th of June:
It's a bit of a dinky film only because it's been adapted from a novel by Bernhard Schlink of the same title (The Reader), which was an assignment. I'm happy with it, just that, as a writer I would have preferred to do an original story. Nonetheless, my actors were and are, amazing and I regret nothing. It's not great but it's an admirable piece nonetheless. The plot may not be original but the concept and delivery, is. It's my first out-of-school, public screening and I would appreciate the support and by all means, spread the word. I'm not sure what to expect but we can say that I'm finally going places with my work, which is always a good sign. Tell your friends. Come support!
